22

Wowser. 22 comments. And for a post with an elitist, French name to boot. Yes, esoder, I believe it is a bluememe record. (I actually had two French titles yesterday -- O'Lielly would have a cow.)

As one commenter noted, the ubiquity of ClearChannel is a real problem for protest music. But the pathetic state of the music biz has more causes than that.

Shows my age, but a few anti-war songs that I'd add are from Mesozoic acts like CCR (Who'll Stop the Rain, Fortunate Son) and ELP (Lucky Man) and of course, Hendrix (Machine Gun).

But the big point I want to make is that I'm thrilled to see this level of participation. Keep on keepin' on.

Sometimes it's strange which posts will bring the most comments... seems they just have to resonate at the right moment.

While I'm not sure how widespread the phenomenon, I'd think that the availability of downloadable music and personal MP3 players have done their part to keep protest music of all types off the air. I can download "American Idiot" or CCR's songs from iTunes or other places and listen to them all I want. But they aren't captured anywhere that feeds into say, Billboard stats. Yet.

I especially like the Clear Channel angle. I always thought of that as just another area of media control in fewer and fewer people's hands, but no different thant say movies, or TV. I thought it allowed vcontrol over who gets popular (The American Idol winners and losers, for example)

But that thread got me thinking that more than subverting music, it subverts the message of that music and that music with the wrong message gets squashed. What if Clay Aiken put out an anti-war song - would that get any play?

I think blue meme you touched a nerve you might say about antiwar songs,no one seems to talk about them near as much as during Vietnam. I was the one who wrote that FINALLY I saw your post mentioning the music,I read alot of blogs and yours was the first I'd seen.I got so wrapped up remembering some of the best from Nam I forgot to mention that how disgusting there are musicians willing to play for defense contractors! It was great to go back and read all of the comments about the songs that are out there...yep,"Fortunate Son" of course was fantastic especially since my brother WAS drafted(by the way he had the exact same physical problem that idiot Rush Limbaugh had but my blue collar brother still had to become a Marine machine gunner in the "bush" for a year!) and of course as one of your other readers mentioned "War" by Edwin Starr.......maybe you could rerun this commentary in the future, that would be great,thanks.....
