The logic of the 21st Century Democratic Party
Although the 43rd President of the United States has clearly committed too many impeachable offenses to count, we should not even initiate impeachment hearings because the 42nd President of the United States was impeached over damn near nothing at all, which means investigating the 43rd President of the United States would be seen as too political.

I'm not sure what your definition of absurd is, but try this as a rephrase:
If we (the congress) try to investigate the crimes of 43rd President, we'll be the ones that wind up locked up, if we're lucky.
Of course, if we (the people) want to see who is really responsible for all the shit that has hit the fan over the past 25 years, we only have to find a mirror. Did everyone think it was somebody else's job to keep an eye on the piggy bank? Well, somebody else has certainly got that job now!
