Explaining Bush's win, Ch. XXIV

Mayor Laura Miller of Dallas has an unusual take on what constitutes public safety:

"Much like beauty, the odds of being a crime victim are in the eye of the beholder.

Based on FBI statistics, Dallas has the highest crime rate among the nation's largest cities. But Americans rated Big D as one of the safest cities to live in or visit in a recent Gallup Poll.

The organization asked 1,012 adults if they viewed 14 major cities as 'safe' or 'unsafe.' About 70 percent said Dallas was safe, putting it third behind less-populous Minneapolis and Seattle.

The worst? Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.

'I think it's the best news I've heard all week,' Mayor Laura Miller said. 'It will be one of those stats that I'll put right in my BlackBerry to spout on a regular basis.'

Only if no one swipes it.
