Alas, Linc, Alas, Poor Lil' Rhody...

The Providence Journal reported this morning that Linc Chafee made it official--he's staying put in the Republican Party (non-Projo Link above courtesy of bluememe).

He got a lot of folks's hopes up--including mine--but this is of no practical consequence over the next two years. Although he's making all of the predictable mea culpas to the party for waffling and particularly for acting out on Election Day (when he made it public that he wrote in W's daddy for president), I didn't bother including his name in yesterday's screed because he won't vote for any of the truly dangerous, far-right garbage that Congress might run up the flagpole.

I'm mostly disappointed because, despite the hammering he's taking from both sides at the moment, this is a thoughtful guy with a ton of integrity, and he's pretty much signed his politcal death warrant here in RI by waffling then staying put. This will open some doors for either Don Carcieri or Steve Laffey to take a run at him in the primaries in '06. Even if he survives--which he might, because of the primary system in RI--he's going to be staring down a well-financed juggernaut in Patrick Kennedy in the general election. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I like Chafee more than Kennedy, who was wrong, wrong, wrong on the war, but Linc is a luxury we can no longer afford.
